The Flourishing Community
For measurably healthier, happier, and more resilient communities.
Who We Are
We are a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to sparking wellbeing transformations for the communities around the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park through engaging learning & community experiences.
Our Mission
We strive to increase the health, happiness and resilience of the communities we serve and set a new standard of the legacy of the Olympics from a mental health perspective.
We believe that everyone, no matter their background, deserves access to tools that give them not only a healthy existence but a vibrant, thriving life. We are proud of our impact, especially for those with barriers to support, and those whose wellbeing have been disrupted.
Our vision
Our aim is that by 2029, the communities around the Park have one of the highest levels of flourishing in London.
We are proud that our organisation is led by residents from diverse backgrounds with lived experience of overcoming mental health challenges.
The State of Wellbeing in the UK
1 in 6 UK adults have a disrupted state of mental or physical wellbeing. Disorders are considered one of the leading cause of death in the UK, more than cancer, smoking & heart disease.
Unfortunately, the current wellbeing model is reactive, in that people only get mental wellbeing support once you’re diagnosed with a mental illness. This approach is resulting in huge costs for the NHS and local government.
Positive psychology offers a preventative model by proactively enabling community members with wellbeing skills. This way, people can take better life choices that prevent them from getting sick, while also allowing them to go north of neutral and thrive.
The Power of Wellbeing Skills
Research shows that 55% of a person’s wellbeing is from intentional action, as opposed to genetics or socio-economic status. Therefore, skills improvement and behaviour change is the biggest factor that can increase a person’s wellbeing. At the moment there is limited wellbeing skills training available for the communities around the Olympic Park.
Unless this skills gap is addressed, more people will remain languishing and unable to realise their potential to thrive and contribute to society. This also takes a toll on the NHS and the local government (The largest proportion of Newham’s budget is spent on mental health support.)
How We Serve the Community
-
Wellbeing Skills Training
We provide free masterclasses every month so that community members can learn and practice the latest science on health, happiness & resilience.
This helps people make better choices and build better habits which they pass on to their families, workspaces, and schools.
-
Social Events
We provide free monthly in-person events to bring together residents, workers, and students who are passionate about wellbeing.
This fosters new connections, deepens relationships, and strengthens people’s support networks.
-
Community Building
We manage the Stratford Wellbeing Whatsapp Group where community members collaborate with each other on all things health and happiness.
By encouraging participation (e.g. sharing healthy seasonal recipes, local sport events, and suggestions for mindful walks in the Park) we foster a community committed to creating greater health, happiness, and resilience for everyone.
Wellbeing Topics
Our training and community engagement activities are mapped against the PERMA-V Model, which is the gold standard for wellbeing.
We build skills across all 6 pathways: Positivity, Engagement, Relationships, Meaning, Achievement, and Vitality (includes Healthy Eating, Movement, Rest & Sleep).
By using this science-backed framework, we are able to provide a holistic approach for community members to achieve lasting health and happiness.
